Twitter のことも載っているロングマン現代英英辞典(第5版)

最近 Twitter の話題を目にする日が増えています。毎日利用している身からすると Twitter なしの世界なんて考えられないくらいにはまっていたりしますが、予想以上に存在感が出てきているような気がします。

最近購入した、図解入りでフルカラーで理解しやすい英英辞書、Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 5th Edition with DVDを見ていたら、 Twitter の項目にちゃんとでていました。

Twitter

a social networking service on the Internet which allows mini-blogging (= sending short text messages to other users )

そして Google です。辞書で Google を調べてみます。

Google

a very popular search engine (= computer program that allows you to search for information on the Internet ) . Google also provides other Internet services including e-mail, maps, social networking , and video sharing.

ちゃんと Google の項目で紹介されています。そして驚くは動詞。

google (verb)

to put a word or words into a search engine , especially Google™, in order to
search for information on the Internet :

I googled her name and found out she runs her own company.

まさにググるという感じで動詞になっています。

YouTube

a website , started in 2005, where users can upload , watch, and share video clips

YouTube もちゃんと辞書に載っていました。

Skype

software that can be used to make telephone calls over the Internet

I’ll Skype you later.

Skype は動詞にもなっていたんですねえ。最近では国際通話の 8% を占めて最大の国際通話プロバイダーになったというニュースもありました。Skype for iPhone もでましたし、ますます存在が高まっています。

blog

a web page containing information or opinions from a particular person or about a particular subject, to which new information is added regularly SYN web log

さすがに iPhone はなかったのですが、iPod はありました。

iPod

a small piece of electronic equipment for playing music, made by the Apple computer company. You can carry an iPod around with you and it can store a very large amount of music which you get from the Internet, from a CD, or from another iPod. iPods can also store videos and games.

個人的に日常目にしている語が辞書から見つけられるとなんとなく嬉しくなってきます。辞書は読み物としてもなかなかおもしろいです。
